Bathildes is a 20 year old Zambian stylist based in London and is currently majoring in English & drama in University. She has stepped out of her comfort zone to pursue her dream of having a fashion career by birthing styledbybathildes. SBB offers personal styling & shopping one to one services , the personal styling is worldwide as she can use online services as well as make digitals outfits. At the moment she is looking into branching into editorial styling too.
In the short time since starting SBB, she has caught a lot of attention on social media as well as inspired a lot of people including myself. I have known Bathildes for a few years now and she has personally shown me the benefits of persevering and chasing your dreams. If you don’t follow Bathildes on instagram then you’re definetly missing out!
I had the privilege of interviewing her and we discussed fashion and being a creative.
What first got you interested in fashion and when did you know it was a passion of yours ?
I mean I have always loved fashion from a very young age especially because my grandmother who is my biggest role model is the biggest fashionista you will ever meet. Growing up I always admired the way she dressed, I still do and she has also helped me have the eye to pick out ‘stand out’ or ‘be different’ pieces of clothing because that is what I’m all about, I don’t want to blend in I want to discover my own sense of style and one day who knows it may become a trend that will inspire many. I discovered my sense of style late 2013 early 2014 , this is when I started to experiment, back then I was all about looking neat , proper, classy and girly
Describe your current style
Right now I’m trying to discover and find myself. I can’t say I have a particular style, okay yes I do to some people but within myself I’m trying to explore through different styles. Right now I would say I’m leaning towards the ‘edgy’ style because I love to experiment, I love to have that ‘OMG’ look because I feel like nowadays so many people look similar in their dressing especially now that we have the ‘Instagram girl trends’. Do not get me wrong I love and enjoy those styles and trends but I am one who doesn’t like to blend in , I love to stand out and be different
Who are your fashion icons (living or dead)?
My grandmother and mother, although my mother has a completely different style to me. Growing up I admired the way she dressed, she loves loves matching and that is where I get it from. The fact that she doesn’t agree with my fashion is why I know I’m doing something right because I don’t agree with hers.
Where do you get inspiration from for your outfit sets you post on instagram and when styling people?
Eveytime someone wants me to style them I always ask for a theme and I get so much inspiration from that. I make a mood board and in my head I know the type of look I want for a specific client just by looking at the mood board, the colours, textures even just words sometimes inspire me. For the Instagram sets I’m always shopping online so when I see clothes and shoes that I like, I wonder how I can wear them, and ideas come to me and I make sets
Describe your ideal client.
My ideal client is…. Anyone !! Anyone that is ready to be extra with me and be over the top and show out is my ideal client. Anyone that isn’t afraid to step out of their comfort zone and try and explore a fun , energetic , different sense of style.
How is it working with clients ? Is it what you expected ?
It is quite stressful and honestly hard. I have had people that have let me down, they have come to me, made me work extra hard for them and then last minute have backed out. However, the clients I have actually styled were amazing! I loved working with them, I love clients that listen to me and trust me.
Who are the 3 celebrities you hope to work with in the near future?
She’s not a celebrity but I would really love to style the DJ Siobhan Bell I really love her aesthetic and vibe. Rihanna and Virgil Abloh
The best Fall outfit consists of…..?
Key accessories, the perfect coat, comfortable shoes and some sassy shades.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years ?
I see myself getting stressed out because there are too many people to style. I see myself expanding and not working alone. I see myself doing editorials, building networks with people, I see myself doing collaborations with well connected companies that will boost my career as a stylist further more I see myself becoming more than just a stylist but turning myself into a brand. I see ‘Bathildes’ as a label on uniquely designed clothing items by Bathildes, of course it may not be in 5 years it may be more it may be less but I see it all.
What’s your life motto?
It’s not about being popular, it’s about being booked & getting real life engagement
