Letting Life Happen
I spent a lot of time this summer learning, growing and falling in love with me again. The Spring semester was a nightmare for me. Mentally I wasn't in the right place and that had a lot to do with depression caused by my birth control as well as other things I was going through. Taking time to really work on my mental, spiritual and physical wellness was so necessary because I now know how important it is to enjoy present moments instead of constantly worrying and wishing for the future. It's still essential that we all have personal goals to reach towards, but being appreciative of where you are gives us humility.
More women need to know the importance of self love and how liberating it is. True self love is self acceptance and also requires us to be both selfish and selfless. Our well-being and happiness is important because it reflects in the way we treat people and how effective we are in work spaces. More black women need to know this because we have been taught from a young age to sacrifice a lot regardless of our personal well-beings and I'm so over it. We all have one life to live and we deserve to live it in the happiest and healthiest way. My priorities have changed and my wellbeing is now my number one priority. I can't support my friends and family if I'm not good. I have to make sure my cup runneth over so that it benefits me as well as the people around me.
My 20s has just begun and one of my main goals is to learn about more cultures and get out of my comfort zone. I have been fortunate enough to live in 4 different countries and that has shown me the beauty and uniqueness culture offers us. I have learnt so much from being around people from different backgrounds, but one of the most important things I've learnt is to always keep an open mind. There are so many people stuck in their ways and who wouldn't change it because they are so comfortable. Life isn't about being comfortable all the time. There are times where we have to be in uncomfortable situations to grow. If there is one thing I wish everyone could do, it'll be to wholeheartedly and authentically experience at least one other culture.
